Swisher - A Healthy Respect For Hygiene

In general, 3 common species of mosquitoes can be found in Singapore. They are:

Aedes

Culex

Anophelis

Mosquitoes are a nuisance to humans. Not only that, they also transmit diseases such malaria and dengue fever. These diseases continue to claim many lives even up till today.

During the first 3 stages of a mosquitoe's life cycle (egg, larval and pupal), they are spent in water. Only a little stagnant water is needed, therefore it is important to check that our premises are constantly free of stagnant water.

Mosquitoes breeds easily in household containers such as flower vases, pots, water jars and such. It also can breed in roof gutters, puddles, discarded containerswhere rainwater can collects.

Aedes is the main transmitter of dengue fever. Aedes have black body and legs with white strips on them.

Controlling Mosquitoes

The most effective way to control mosquitoes breeding is to remove their breeding ground - stagnant water.

Change water in all containers regularly. Preferably change at least once a week as it typically take about 7 days for an egg to become and adult mosquitoe.

Make sure there are no unused containers around your house that can collect water. Inspect roof gutters regularly for blockages.

All water storage jars, containers should be covered to prevent breeding.

Change water in plant pots and plates regularly. You can also put insecticide granules into plant pots to kill the larvae.

Get professional help if you suspect your house is breeding mosquitoes.
